European travel insurance

• How can I purchase insurance?

  Cancellation insurance can be purchased online or on a mobile device and at ticket counters.

• Which offers is insurance offered for?
  • Sparschiene tickets (domestic and international)
  • International global price (e.g. TGV, Eurostar Italia, Thalys, Eurostar London...)
  • ÖBB Nightjet and Nightjet partner offers (standard price and Sparschiene tickets)
• What does the insurance cover?

  If you are unable to travel for an insured reason, e.g. due to an unexpected serious illness or accident, and cancel your trip, Europäische Reiseversicherung will reimburse you for the agreed cancellation costs up to the selected cost of the trip.

• What is not covered by the insurance?
  • Intentional or grossly negligent acts on the part of the insured person
  • Significant impairment due to alcohol, drugs or medication
  • If the reason for the cancellation of the trip was already apparent or foreseeable when the insurance policy was taken out

  For the avoidance of doubt: cancellations at the insured person’s own request are not insured.

• What should I do if an event covered by the insurance occurs?

  If you are unable to start your booked journey, please check the respective provisions on the refund options for the ticket in the fare conditions in Part B.1. for the relevant tickets under "What refund options do you have for this ticket".

  If your ticket is fully or partially refundable, please contact the ÖBB Customer Service or go to a ticket counter and cancel the tickets. In the event of illness or an accident, please obtain a detailed medical certificate/accident report.

  Please submit insurance claims as soon as possible by means of an online claim report.

• Which insurance conditions apply?

  The conditions for utilization can be found on the insurance policy sent to you and under product Information (german only).

• Can I only cancel the insurance?

  If the insured train tickets are reimbursed in full by ÖBB PV AG owing to reasons attributable to the railway (e.g. train cancellation), you will receive a refund of the insurance premium.

  If you have taken out insurance in error, please contact the ÖBB Customer Service Centre or go to a ticket counter immediately to cancel the policy.

  If you are a consumer, you can withdraw from the insurance contract in writing within 14 days of receipt of the insurance policy without having to state a reason. However, the right of cancellation does not apply if the contract term is shorter than 6 months.

• How and where can I get an invoice for my insurance policy?

  No VAT is incurred as part of an insurance policy, only insurance tax, so the insurance is not part of your input tax confirmation. Your cancellation insurance is indicated on the booking confirmation.

• Can I purchase insurance without buying a ticket?

  No, insurance can only be taken out at the same time as a ticket purchase. ÖBB customers can take out insurance cover for all their journeys over the course of the year online.

• I booked the trip for several people, but there is only one name on the insurance policy. Is everyone insured?

  Yes, the cancellation costs of all the persons travelling on the insured tickets are covered.
