Fare calculations
-
How are the fares calculated?
The fares are calculated based on the route you have travelled and the fare conditions of ÖBB-Personenverkehr AG or the respective transport associations.
-
Where can I see the provisional cost of my journey?
You can view the provisional fare for your past journeys in your ÖBB account in the "Past journeys" section of SimplyGo.
-
When will I be charged for my journeys?
We automatically bill your trips made with SimplyGo! on the following day using your saved credit/debit card.
-
How do I get an overview of the journeys that have been billed for?
You will receive an email from us the next day with a detailed overview of the journeys you have made with SimplyGo!, the tickets you have been charged for and the input tax certificate.
-
What does "provisional fare" mean?
You can find the provisional fare for your journey under My SimplyGo! in your ÖBB account. This is the unit price for the respective journey. The "final price" is only determined when the optimised fare is calculated on the following day.
-
What does "optimised fare calculation" mean?
An optimised fare calculation is made for all journeys made within a period between 4.10 am on the day of travel and 4.10 am on the following day.
The first step is for the system to determine the appropriate ticket(s) for each individual journey. This is also used to calculate the unit price shown for the journey. The tickets that are determined in this way then serve as the basis for any optimisations. For example, one day ticket is charged if you make several journeys on the same route or in the same urban transport area instead of several individual tickets.
In order to avoid having to interrupt night-time journeys, for example on night buses or underground trains, beyond this period, journeys that start after midnight and continue beyond 4.10 a.m. are only factored into the daily statement for the following day.
Examples of fare optimisation on a per-day basis
Example 1
The day ticket (1 Tag Wien) was withdrawn from the Wiener Linien fare system on 1 July 2024. It is therefore no longer available for optimisation in SimplyGo! It is still possible to optimise to 24-hour tickets in the Vienna core zone.
Fictitious scenario: Sabine Moser lives in Mödling and is going on a day trip to Vienna. She wants to go shopping in the city centre, have lunch at Schottentor, take a walk through Schönbrunn Palace Park and then go to the Prater. In total, she makes the following 5 journeys in one calendar day and has not saved any discounts in her customer account.
A journey is always the period from check-in to check-out.
Journey Fare Journey 1

Fare optimisation on a per-day basis
1x Vienna Day Ticket instead of 3x VOR single journeys in Vienna for journeys 2, 3 and 4
€ -1.40
Total after fare optimisation
€ 15.60
When calculating the fare at 4:10 am on the following day, the VOR single journeys in Vienna are optimised to a VOR Day Ticket Vienna because journeys 2, 3 & 4 have the same area of validity. Journeys 1 & 5 have the same area of validity, but in comparison to the others only an overlap of the section. This section is not affected by the optimisation.
Example 2
Fictitious scenario: Lucia Hinteregger lives in Vienna and has some errands to run in the early afternoon. In the evening, she meets her friends in a bar in the centre of Vienna. In the early hours of the following morning, she takes the underground home. In total, she makes 3 journeys on one calendar day and a further journey between midnight and 4.10 a.m. on the following calendar day. She has not saved any discounts in her customer account.
A journey is always the period from check-in to check-out.

Check-out: Vienna Stephansplatz at 10:00 pmVOR single journey Vienna
€ 2.40
Journey 4

Check-out: Vienna Oberlaa at 3.15 am the following dayVOR single journey Vienna
€ 2.40
Sum of all individual fares
€ 9.60
Fare optimisation on a per-day basis
1x VOR Vienna 24-hour ticket instead of 4x VOR Vienna single tickets for journeys 1, 2, 3 and 4
- € 1.60
Total after fare optimisation
€ 8.00
When calculating the fare at 4:10 am on the following day, the 4 VOR Vienna single tickets will be optimised to a VOR Vienna 24-hour ticket.
If Lucia Hinteregger uses the SimplyGo! function for further journeys on the following day, the 24-hour travelcard can continue to be used within the period and local area of validity. This requires Lucia to continue to check-in before the start of the journey and check-out at the destination station.
If she had already travelled from Vienna Stephansplatz to Vienna Oberlaa at 00:15 am on the following day, she would not have been charged a VOR 24-hour ticket but a VOR day ticket as part of the fare optimisation on a per-day basis.
Example 3
Fictitious scenario: Martin Bösendorfer lives in Vienna and has to go abroad for a business meeting. Before he leaves the country in the evening, he wants to use the day in the office for meetings. In the morning, he takes the underground from his flat near Praterstern to the office at Naschmarkt to work there for a few hours. Because he has forgotten something important at home, he leaves the office a little earlier and takes the underground to get back to his flat. He then hurries back to Praterstern station to catch his train to Vienna Airport.
He has not saved any discounts in his customer account.
A journey is always the period from check-in to check-out.
Journey Fare Journey 1
Check-in: Vienna Praterstern at 7:45 am
Check-out: Vienna Kettenbrückengasse at 8:30 amVOR single journey Vienna
€ 2.40
Journey 2
Check-in: Vienna Kettenbrückengasse at 3:05 pm
Check-out: Vienna Praterstern at 3:30 pmVOR single journey Vienna

Journey 3
Check-in: Vienna Praterstern at 5:10 pm
Check-out: Vienna Airport Railway Station at 5:45 pmVOR single journey
€ 4.90
Sum of all individual fares
€ 9.70
No fare optimisations
Total after fare optimisation
€ 9.70
When the fare is calculated at 4:10 am on the following day, there is no optimisation, as the calculated tickets from journeys 1 & 2 are still cheaper than a VOR Vienna Day Ticket and journey 3 is only valid for part of the route.
