The Neue Hofburg tour offers a unique account of the rise and fall of one of the most powerful European ruling families of the past millennium. At the site of their last seat of power and residence, the Neue Burg, we present imperial stories stretching from the founding fathers of the House of Habsburg to Sisi, and provide insights into the world of the emperor.
Triumph and tragedy intertwine in the history of the Habsburg Monarchy. Under this dynasty, Vienna was a centre of power and music. One place where all this can be traced in a unique way is the Neue Burg, the newest wing of the Hofburg in Vienna. This is partly due to the building itself, which is steeped in history, and partly to the two collections it houses, the Court Hunting Chamber and Armoury and the Collection of Old Musical Instruments.
Our tour takes you on a journey through the entire history of the Habsburgs from the late Middle Ages to the modern age, passing armour that would have been worth the equivalent of a sports car in present-day terms, a fortepiano on which Mozart once played, and the only true-to-life wax bust of Joseph Haydn. The tour leads visitors through the corridors and halls where the spirit of Sisi lingers, for the empress, who was assassinated in 1898, never moved into the chambers she had been given.
