Ambras Castle in Innsbruck is one of the most beautiful and outstanding attractions in Austria and is one of the top destinations in Tyrol. Among other things, it houses the famous Chamber of Art and Wonders, armouries, the unique Spanish Hall, and the well-preserved original bath of Philippine Welser. The world’s first museum invites you to discover its treasures and experience its history.
Delve into the past: The origin of the castle can be traced back to a particularly beautiful love story. As the daughter of an Ausburg merchant, Philippine Welser did not befit the social status of Archduke Ferdinand II, the Habsburg Emperor’s son. (1529-1595). Nevertheless, he asked for her hand in marriage and gifted her Ambras Castle as a token of his love.
An extraordinary collection: In a specially constructed museum building, Ferdinand II also housed his numerous and, at times, exotic treasures made of crystal, silver, gold or glass, as well as armour, weapons, and paintings. The world’s first museum - a true must-see, back then and today!
